Desert Mountain is a guard-gated golf community of roughly 8,000 acres in far North Scottsdale, near Carefree and bordered by the Tonto National Forest. It sits around 3,000 feet and higher, so it runs cooler than the valley floor, and it’s built around the member-owned Desert Mountain Club and its Jack Nicklaus golf courses.
The community is divided into dozens of villages, from compact cottages to golf course homes and custom estates high on the ridges. Each village has its own character and price range, so your comparable sales should come from your village and product type, not from Desert Mountain as a whole.
Desert Mountain Club offers six Jack Nicklaus Signature courses (Renegade, Cochise, Geronimo, Apache, Chiricahua and Outlaw) plus No. 7, a short par-3 course with its own casual clubhouse. A golf performance center, a large fitness and spa campus, tennis and pickleball round out the club’s facilities.
A private trail system runs through the community’s desert and into the foothills, from easy wash walks to steep climbs such as the China Wall, and some trails connect to the Tonto National Forest. For many buyers, that trail access is nearly as important as the golf.
The club’s clubhouses provide most of the dining inside the gates. Carefree and Cave Creek are a few minutes away for restaurants, galleries and everyday shopping, and The Summit at Scottsdale, Desert Ridge, Kierland Commons and Scottsdale Quarter are a longer drive south.
Desert Mountain is about 13 miles north of Loop 101. Downtown Phoenix and Sky Harbor Airport are each roughly 45 to 55 minutes away, depending on traffic. Sky Ranch at Carefree, a small private airport, is close by, and Scottsdale Airport handles corporate and charter flights. Most residents use golf carts inside the gates.
HonorHealth Scottsdale Thompson Peak Medical Center is the nearest hospital, about 20 to 25 minutes south, and Mayo Clinic’s campuses are farther. Urgent care is available along the Pima Road corridor.
Desert Mountain buyers often come from out of state and know the club well before they tour. I build the marketing around what they’re paying for: the view, the village, the golf and the trails. That means professional photography, a Zillow 3D Home tour, a dedicated property website and a listing written around those details, with gate access coordinated for every showing.
Club membership questions come up early in every Desert Mountain sale, so we’ll confirm your membership status and the association documents before listing to keep escrow on schedule.

For current prices, inventory and days on market, see the live Desert Mountain market report on this page, which updates from ARMLS. Sales range from cottages to large custom estates, so I build every price from the sales most like your home and village.
Desert Mountain Club’s facilities include seven Jack Nicklaus courses, a golf performance center, a fitness and spa campus, tennis on several surfaces, pickleball, bocce and croquet, several clubhouses with dining, and a private trail network. Many social clubs and events run through the club year-round.
Carefree’s town center and Cave Creek’s Western-style main street are a few minutes from the gate for dining, galleries and errands. The Summit at Scottsdale handles groceries and services, and Desert Ridge, Kierland Commons and Scottsdale Quarter are a longer drive south. Taliesin West and Old Town Scottsdale are about half an hour away.
Pima Road and Scottsdale Road lead south about 13 miles to Loop 101. From there, downtown Phoenix and Sky Harbor Airport are each roughly 45 to 55 minutes from the gate in normal traffic. Sky Ranch at Carefree is about a mile away for private flights, and Scottsdale Airport is a longer drive south. There’s no public transit in this area.
HonorHealth Scottsdale Thompson Peak Medical Center is the nearest acute-care hospital, and Mayo Clinic’s Phoenix and Scottsdale campuses are farther south. Urgent care clinics are closer, along the Pima Road corridor. Scottsdale Fire Department serves the area.
The private trail network is the community’s outdoor highlight, with routes for walking, hiking and mountain biking and connections into the Tonto National Forest. The McDowell Sonoran Preserve is a drive south for more public trails. The higher elevation keeps mornings and evenings a little cooler, which stretches the outdoor season.
Club life is busy, with dozens of social clubs, dinners, wine events and golf tournaments throughout the year. Nearby Carefree and Cave Creek add art festivals, rodeo events and gallery tours, and spring training games draw crowds each February and March.
At around 3,000 feet and above, Desert Mountain runs several degrees cooler than the Scottsdale valley floor in summer, with mild, sunny winters and the July–September monsoon season. That cooler climate is one of the things buyers ask about, and winter is when many out-of-state buyers visit.
The Desert Mountain Community Association enforces CC&Rs and architectural guidelines that keep homes in harmony with the desert, including building envelopes that preserve native desert on each lot. All exterior changes and new construction require review. Buyers will ask for approvals on any past exterior work, so I help you gather that paperwork early. Washes run through the community, so a specific lot’s flood zone is worth checking on FEMA’s Flood Map Service Center.
Many owners here work remotely or split their time between homes. For those who commute, the Loop 101 corridor and the Scottsdale Airpark are the nearest major employment areas, and Mayo Clinic and HonorHealth are large employers in North Scottsdale. A quiet home office with a view is worth highlighting in the listing.
For a specific home’s property tax, look up the parcel on the Maricopa County Treasurer’s website. Association fees vary by village and home type, and Desert Mountain Club membership carries its own fees and dues. Buyers see the exact figures during escrow. When you sell, I’ll estimate your net proceeds after commission, title, escrow and any transfer fees.
Desert Mountain is within the City of Scottsdale, which provides police, fire and emergency medical service, trash and recycling, and public road maintenance outside the gates. The Desert Mountain Community Association manages common areas and standards inside the gates.
